He was sentenced to undergo five years imprisonment and fined Rs 5,000 on charges of abetment of suicide and one more year of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 for attempting suicide.
Reacting to the verdict, Pratyusha’s mother P Sarojini Devi, said: “This is only 50 per cent punishment. I’ll make sure that the accused gets life imprisonment.’’
The CBI took Reddy into custody immediately after the verdict was announced. Reddy refused to respond to posers from reporters, saying: “I have nothing to tell you’’.
Pratyusha, then an upcoming actress, and her classmate Siddhartha Reddy, fell in love and planned to get married. However, their proposed marriage was opposed by the Reddy family.
According to investigations, Reddy met Pratyusha at a beauty parlour on Feb 23, 2002 and took her away in his car. He bought 250 ml of novocran, a pesticide, from a shop in Hyderguda.
Both of them consumed the poison laced with cola. Later Reddy took Pratyusha to Care Hospital where both of them were admitted.
Pratyusha died the next day. Subsequently, investigators concluded that Siddhartha had driven Pratyusha to suicide.

It is murkier than we thought. A week after the death of budding actress Pratyusha, things have turned full circle. Pratyusha, an upcoming actress who did both Tamil and Telugu films, ended her life in dramatic situation last week. According to police sources, she ended her life taking Novocron along with her lover Siddharth Reddy. Soon she admitted into hospital but she died in the hospital bed. Her lover is in still coma.Everyone thought that it was a suicide attempt initially. But when the forensic reports came out the case turned dramatically. Forensic Doctor Munuswamy declared that she was sexually abused and he also found some scars on her body. He even said that he had doubts that it was not just a suicide case.
Then the local media probed the things. Shocking revelations have been coming out day after day. Newspapers reported that three of Siddhartha's friends kidnapped Pratyusha on that day and raped her in her Maruthi car. According to some reports, there is a political hand too. 'We didn't find any concrete evidence that she had been sexually abused,' said Hyderabad city police commissioner M.V.Krishna Rao on Wednesday. So, from police point of view, the case is ended. It is, according to them, just a 'suicide case'.
